It was built in 1935 as a spillway for the waters of the Isonzo: in the event that the flow of the river, which is characterised by sudden and powerful floods (called “montane”), had become excessive, this would have threatened the newly reclaimed lands. As such, this work was intended to make it possible to discharge the excess water into the Quarantia canal.
However, the danger that this operation could have caused excessive debris to collect in the direction of the port of Monfalcone meant that the work was not used for this purpose, but instead it remained as a dividing dam between the Sdobba and the Quarantia.
